Professional Profile

My name is Hal and I am a Web Developer. And a Graphic Designer. And a Database Administrator. And a Marketer. And a Project Manager. And an Information Technology Executive and Strategist with over 10+ years of experience. But what I really am is a Problem Solver.

I pride myself on being able to solve problems, ranging in complexity from search algorithms to making your computer boot faster to choosing a background color for a layout. I believe that anything is solvable; it simply requires an understanding of the full scope of the problem and the willingness to take the problem head-on. This is what makes a person such as myself so valuable; I have the keen ability to translate issues from top-level ideas to technical solutions, with all steps in between - from design to delivery. It's a skill that has carried me far and has carried the organizations I work for even farther.

Vice President of Information Technology

American Society of Nephrology, Washington, DC

Oversee the Information Technology Department, including strategic management of all IT projects, preparing business plans and proposals for technology ventures, and writing code for the website and integration projects. My current responsibilities focus on expanding our online distance learning and membership offerings, including:

  • Design, create, and maintain all aspects of multiple organization websites, using ASP.NET, PHP, JavaScript, XML/XSLT/SOAP, and Flash
  • Technical lead and primary administrator for Abila netFORUM, our membership database and Association Management Software (AMS)
  • Manage vendors and integration projects to achieve strategic organizational goals involving AMS and membership data

Established the Information Services Team, a strategic business unit of the Member Services Department that combined traditional elements of marketing/communications with emerging technology-related systems and mechanisms for interacting with a broad and diverse membership base. My responsibilities included:

  • Established a formal Information Services Department, the precursor to the Information Technology Department
  • Developed integration mechanisms for online systems to interact with membership database and AMS software

August 2007 - August 2008

Website Developer

Redesigned the previous iteration of the ASN website, focusing on standards-compliant code and interoperability across all browsers and constituent computer systems.

  • Created all code using XHTML Transitional 1.0 standards and upgraded platform from ASP.NET 1.1 to ASP.NET 4.0
  • Implemented 508 standards and best practices for supporting accessibility and user defined controls throughout website
